Outdoor exhibition "Capturing Beech Forests" in Altkünkendorf
To mark the 15th anniversary of the World Heritage designation, this outdoor exhibition titled “Capturing Beech Forests” is taking place in Altkünkendorf. The exhibition features photographs of ancient beech forests from across Europe. Many of the images were taken in various component parts of the UNESCO World Heritage site Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe. It is the largest serial UNESCO World Heritage site in the world, bringing together the last untouched primeval beech forests and nearly pristine beech forests of Europe across 18 countries.
Since 2011, the Grumsin beech forest has been one of these 93 component sites.
The photos were produced in collaboration with the “Interreg Project BEECH POWER – World Heritage Beech Forests: Strengthening Ecosystem-Based Sustainable Development”, the “Interreg Volunteer Youth Programme”, and the “European Beech Forest Network”. Volunteer Cristina Lemmo collected these photographs of beech forests from across Europe, and Helen Münnich, head of the Altkünkendorf Visitor Centre, made a further selection from them.
The images are intended not only to showcase the beauty of these beech forest regions. They are also intended to draw attention to the threats and encourage people to protect them.
The outdoor exhibition can be visited next to the Altkünkendorf village church until October 31, 2026.
Another part of the exhibition is located in the NABU Blumberger Mühle Experience Center, in the restaurant area, and can also be visited there until October 31, 2026.
